Greater Wellington Citroën Car Club Inc 40th Anniversary - 29/30 November 2003 |

The weather was perfect as we set off from the starting point at the Plimmerton Weigh station on SH1 north of Porirua. About eight or nine Citroens arrived for the first stage, which took us up to Waikanae for morning tea at the Olive Grove Café. By the time we got to the Brooklyne Tearooms in Sanson for lunch there was more than a couple of dozen, all seemingly in wonderful condition An impressive lineup, including a contingent from the Taranaki Club. After lunch President Vic took us on a wonderful convoy drive through the back roads of Ashhurst, Bunnythorpe and the Manawatu gorge prior to arriving at the Mt Bruce Wildlife Reserve in time for afternoon tea. Then it was a short downhill burst over the undulating Wairarapa countryside. We all checked in at the Chanel Court Motel which proved very adequate for our requirements and ensured a group environment. It was also within walking distance to the Cosmopolitan club, which was the venue for our evening meal. Local member Ken McKay also provided a mini van, to shuttle us to and fro. We had our own area (appropriately decorated), and a private bar, and thus were able to reminisce to hearts content on all manner of happenings over the years since those early beginnings back in 1963. Some founding members were called upon to tell us a bit of early history and Peter Stewart and Chas O'Donnell were first to set the scene for us. During the course of the evening David Gerrie and Alan Upston also spoke about past and present happenings. A special 40th anniversary cake was later consumed and an anonymous member also donated seven bottles of quality French wine, which was duly distributed as a result of lucky dip draws. Well done to all attending and making this the highlight of the weekend. The following Sunday morning comprised a visit to Terry Falkners's workshop where he is working on the restoration of a DS, and then around to Liz and Terry's home, before heading off to nearby Solstone Estate Winery & Restaurant. A guided educational tour of the vineyard and wine making processes proceeded the luncheon before we all headed for home by mid afternoon. It was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend, made successful buy all those who were able to attend, and participate. Also special thanks to President Vic Young for bringing the occasion to fruition, and also to Ken McKay for co-ordinating the Masterton connection, thereby ensuing many pleasant memories. Hope we can all do it again in another ten years for the big 5 0. |
